Despite the immense heat which had caused disruption throughout the day at Melbourne Park, three-time Australian Open finalist Andy Murray won the last 23 consecutive points to come from 5-1 down in the third set for a 6-2, 6-2, 7-5 second-round win over French qualifier Vincent Millot.

Murray was a finalist in 2010, 2011 and 2013, losing to Novak Djokovic twice and Roger Federer once.

The Australian Open is the first tournament Murray has played in since minor back surgery in September.

In other matches, American Sloane Stephens beat Ajla Tomljanovic of Croatia 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 - and Jelena Jankovic defeated Ayumi Morita of Japan, 6-2, 6-0 in just under an hour.

In the biggest upset so far at the tournament, fifth-seed Juan Martin del Potro ended a long day by losing his second-round match 4-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 to Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut.

Fernando Verdasco was also a high-profile scalp for Teymuraz Gabashvili.

    The Russian triumphed over the Spanish 31st seed, 7-6 (7-1), 3-6, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
