The 2014 World Rally season got underway in Monte Carlo on Thursday.

Former F1 driver Robert Kubica was the surprise early leader, but all changed after stage three.

Only a handful of drivers opted to take a brace of snow tyres on SS3, and amongst them was Bryan Bouffier. By fitting one snow tyre on the front and one on the rear of his Ford Fiesta RS, he was able to take a huge chunk of time out of his closest rivals and leap into the overall lead by 41.5-seconds.

Dani Sordo, Elfyn Evans and Kris Meeke also benefited from having snow tyres on board for SS3. Meeke jumped into second place overall and Sordo took third. Kubica, the rally leader going into the stage, didn't have snow tyres and promptly dropped to fourth place.

The top three remained untroubled until SS5 when Sordo suffered an electrical fault on his Hyundai i20 and his Rally was over, while Sebastien Ogier gave his home fans hope with the fastest time on both SS5 and SS6.

Kubica held second place going into stage six but he struggled in the conditions and dropped a surprising 21.2-seconds at the finish.

Meeke saw an opportunity to claim the place and emerged only 17.7-seconds slower than Ogier, and was able to steal second place by just 0.7-seconds.

So, after SS6 Bryan Bouffier leads the Rally - by 38.8 seconds over Meeke, with Kubica third.
