Nishikori makes most of Gasquet withdrawal

  • Intro:

Kei Nishikori gave himself a timely boost ahead of the Australian Open with an impressive straight sets win over Tomas Berdych in the final of the Kooyong Classic in Melbourne.

    Script:

After his defeat to the Czech earlier in the week, Kei Niskikori wasn't expecting to have a second bite at Tomas Berdych in the final of the Kooyong Classic.

The Japanese was defeated by Berdych in the semi-finals, but somewhat bizarrely came up againt him again in Melbourne when both Richard Gasquet and Gilles Simon were both unavailable due to injury.

And Nishikori, the world number 17 made the most of his opportunity against a player ranked ten places above him, sealing an early break.

That was shortly before sealing the opening set 6-4.

A closely-fought second saw the 2012 Australian Open quarter-finalist break at the most crucial of moments.

Victory here in straight sets the perfect morale-booster as he looks to beat that mark when the first grand slam of the year gets under way this weekend.

First up for Nishikori is a meeting with Australian Marinko Matosevic, while Oleksandr Nedovyesov provides the opposition for three-times quarter-finalist Berdych.
