Australian skipper Jimmy Spithill and Oracle Team USA completed one of the finest comebacks in sporting history on Wednesday as they rallied from 8-1 down to clinch the America's Cup 9-8.

They faced Emirates Team New Zealand in a winner-takes-all Race 19 on San Francisco Bay and emerged victorious, their eighth race win in a row.

Owned by software billionaire Larry Ellison, Oracle Team USA were docked two points for illegally modifying boats in warmup regattas and had to win 11 races to keep the trophy.

After the Kiwis won four of the first five races, the USA modified their boat and called in British sailing legend Ben Ainslie from the warm-up crew.

A decision which proved to be instrumental as Ainslie along with Spithill managed the most remarkable turnaround in the event's 162-year history.

Oracle's catamaran buried its twin bows in a wave approaching the first mark and Emirates Team New Zealand with Dean Barker as skipper turned around the buoy with a 7-second lead.

That lead was reduced to three seconds by the third leg though.

And eventually Oracle showed their class and won Race 19 by 44 seconds.
