Chinese pair beat Germans to go through to last four of FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships

    Top seeds Chen Xue and Zhang Xi of China are through to the women's semi-finals at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in Poland after victory against the German pairing of Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst on Friday

    The last 16 and quarter finals of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships was played on Friday.

    Greta Cicolari and Marta Menegatti started their day by knocking out crowd favourites Kinga Kolosinska and Monika Brzostek 21-14, 21-12 in 34 minutes.

    Later in the day though, the Italian's were knocked out.

    The top-rated Chinese partnership of Chen Xue and Xi Zhang march on relatively untroubled. Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst of Germany were disposed of in the quarter-finals, 21-15, 21-15 in just 39 minutes.

    It was the still the round of 32 in the men's competition with Pedro Solberg Salgado and Bruno Oscar Schmidt of Brazil eliminated home pairing of Grzegorz Fijalek and Mariusz Prudel 21-17, 21-16.

    But another Polish team had the fans roaring. Michal Kadziola and Jakub Szalankiewicz defeated Daniel Muellner and Joerg Wutzl of Austria, 21-16, 21-15.

    The popular Latvian duo of Janis Smedins and Aleksandrs Samoilovs edged Sebastian Dollinger and Stefan Windscheif of Germany 22-20, 27-25.

    And the evergreen Alison Cerutti and Emanuel Rego of Brazil also progressed. They defeated Todd Rogers and Ryan Doherty of the USA, 21-19, 21-12.
