With the clay-court season over, the players' attention has turned to grass, with many of the top players in action at the Wimbledon warm-up tournament in Halle, Germany on Tuesday (12th June).

Sixth-seeded Marcel Granollers of Spain overcame spirited resistance from Mischa Zverev of Germany, ranked 190, to reach the second round, the final score 6-4, 6-2.

But Florian Mayer raised the spirits of the German supporters, beating American qualifier Tim Smyczek in straight sets to set up a daunting second-round encounter against five-time winner Roger Federer.

Serbia's Viktor Troicki will meet third-seed Tomas Berdych in round two.

He saw off the challenge from Benjamin Becker of Germany 6-2, 7-6(6).

Meanwhile Australian teenager Bernard Tomic emerged as a Wimbledon worry after being forced to retire citing sickness towards the end of his first set against veteran German Tommy Haas.

Last year 19-year-old Tomic became the youngest player since Boris Becker to reach the quarter-finals of Wimbledon.
