Sunday's women's singles final pitted former world number one Serena Williams against the current incumbent - Victoria Azarenka.

Williams had won six of her seven previous matches with Azarenka and took control of this meeting from the start, breaking the Belarussian in the opening game.

The number nine seed strengthened her grip on the opening set by holding in the next game and then broke Azarenka again for a commanding 3-0 lead.

Azarenka finally held serve third time around to trail 4-1, but Williams broke again in the seventh game, taking the set 6-1 when her opponent double-faulted.

Top seed Azarenka was seeking a fifth title of the season, but she was overpowered again at the start of the second set by Williams - the American breaking in the second game to lead 2-0.

Australian Open champion Azarenka matched Williams the rest of the way, but that early break proved to be enough.

Williams served out a 6-1, 6-3 victory in an hour and four minutes with an ace for her second title of the season - both coming on clay.

The 30-year-old is unbeaten on the surface this year and took her tally of career singles titles to 41.
