Second seed Maria Sharapova beat third seed Petra Kvitova, the Wimbledon champion, 6-4, 7-6 (3), to book her place in the final of the Porsche Grand Prix.

With world number one Victoria Azarenka already in the final, second seed met third as Maria Sharapova took on Petra Kvitova in the other semi final of the Porsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart.

The Russian broke in the fifth game and never looked back, going on to take the opening set 6-4.

However the reigning Wimbledon champion improved in the second set, carving out eleven break points but only converted her twelfth having saved a match point and forced the set to a tiebreaker.

And at the crucial stage Sharapova made fewer errors to win 6-4, 7-6 (3) to set up a mouth watering final with Azarenka.

The Belarusian leads Sharapova 5-3 in career meetings.
