Sharapova sails through to third round

Thursday, April 26 2012 by SNTV

  • Intro:

There were wins for Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska, Mona Barthel of Germany and Russia's Maria Sharapova on day two at the Porsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Germany on Wednesday.

Radwanska, the number four seed, beat Hungarian qualifier Greta Arn 6-3, 6-4 in the second round, wild card entry Barthel upset world number 15 Ana Ivanovic 7-5, 7-6(4) in round one and Sharapova went through after her opponent, French qualifier Alize Cornet, had to retire with a shoulder injury when a set and 1-0 down.

    Script:

Fairly dramatic intros but no major dramas as there were first round wins for German Julia Goerges and Andrea Petkovic in the night session at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart.

Goerges, the defending champion, dropped the first set against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

But the Russian player's game was ultimately found wanting as Goerges clinched a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 victory.

Petkovic's win was more straight forward - she overcame compatriot Kristina Barrois in straight sets 6-1, 6-4.

Petkovic can now look forward to a stern test in the second round against world number one Victoria Azarenka.

And world number two Maria Sharapova was also on court, facing a potentially tricky second round match with French qualifier Alize Cornet.

Sharapova fell behind in the opening set, but fought back to take it 6-3.

Then trouble hit as Cornet received extensive treatment for a shoulder injury at courtside.

She could only manage one more game before she was forced to retire.

Sharapova clearly sorry for her opponent, having had her own share of shoulder injuries.

Sharapova will play either Samantha Stosur or defending champion Julia Gorges in the quarter-finals.
