  • Intro:

Agnieszka Radwanska beat unseeded Julia Goerges in straight sets 7-5, 6-4 to win the Dubai Tennis Championships on Saturday (25 February).

The Pole, ranked fifth at the hardcourt event, triumphed in an hour and 45 minutes.

The 22-year-old now has eight WTA singles titles to her name.

    Script:

Agnieszka Radwanska had won their only previous meeting, routing Julia Goerges 6-1 6-1 in the last 16 of this year's Australian Open.

Another thrashing looked a possibility - judging by just the opening game of Saturday's final of the Dubai Tennis Championships.

The big-hitting German seemed overawed, losing her serve in that game.

    But Georges rallied.

She broke back in the eighth game to make it 4-4 but serving at 5-5 her aggressive approach backfired.

She had four chances to serve out the game, but wasted them all to give the dogged Radwanska a break point which the Pole converted when Goerges took on a volley mid-court and blasted it wide.

Radwanska served out to take the first set 7-5 and moved ahead in the second as her opponent's errors piled up.

Goerges provided some late resistance when she clawed back one break of serve and then had a point to make it 5-5 when Radwanska served for the match.

She narrowly missed a forehand and Radwanska sealed victory on her second match point.

7-5, 6-4 the scoreline - Radwanska will rise one place to a career-best number five when the world rankings are released Monday.
