Redknapp backs Parker for England captaincy

Saturday, February 25 2012 by SNTV

  • Intro:

Tottenham manager and favourite to land the England manager's job Harry Redknapp has backed his current Spurs player Scott Parker to take over from John Terry as captain.

Redknapp refused to answer questions about his future and instead appeal to both Tottenham and Arsenal fans not to engage in abusive behaviour when the north London rivals meet on Sunday.

With Spurs currently third, ahead of Arsenal and Chelsea, Redknapp also revealed his ultimate aim was to finish as the top London club at the end of the season at a news conference on Friday.

(on Scott Parker) "I think Scotty, for sure he could captain England, but it's up to Stuart who he picks. There's a lot of good candidates there for sure. But Scotty's captained the team here, a couple of times this year. He's just a fantastic boy, a great professional, as I've said a million times. You couldn't get a better boy. Top-class, top-class person and a top-class player."

"That's the most important thing for me this year, I really want to try and finish top London club. We've got a great opportunity in the position we're in, but as I said, it can all change very quickly. We've got to keep it going and keep playing the way we are to do that, so that would be the key. Anything above that would be a fantastic bonus but that third spot, I want that at least."

SUPER CAPTION: Harry Redknapp, Tottenham Hotspur manager.

"I just hope they can go and enjoy the game, and get on with the game. Last week we went over to Stevenage and had a nice game. It was only a small crowd, but the people enjoyed the game, they got behind their teams and there was no aggro, no filthy chanting, the people from Stevenage were good as gold. You can go there on Sunday and enjoy the game of football. I don't see how you can watch a game of football, when you stood there chanting to the people over there, and they aren't even watching the game, half of them. I don't know.
