Manchester United are reportedly keen to keep Edinson Cavani for another year before they make a blockbuster move for Erling Haaland.

Cavani's contract is due to expire at the end of the season, having only agreed a one-year deal when he joined on a free transfer last summer.

The Uruguay international has shown his goal scoring prowess despite a limited number of game time, scoring 10 goals in all competitions.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desperate to keep him on the books for another year, according to the Mirror, before they could potentially make a move for Borussia Dortmund star in 2022.

Haaland is being linked with an exit in the coming month to either the Premier League or La Liga, but Dortmund are not believed to be interested in selling.

The Norway international might be available next summer though when his £68m release clause comes into play, which is when United would be looking to swoop.

Solskjaer recently admitted that it was looking like Cavani would return to South America to be with his family.

"We're still in the same boat with Edinson in that he's not 100% decided on his future yet," the Norwegian explained.

"He's not told me he wants to leave but I'm very aware he might be going back home to South America with the difficult year he has had and if that's his decision I'll understand that.

"But he knows my view. He knows I'd love to see him play in front of the Man United fans at Old Trafford.

"It will be the year when we can get the fans back in and it's important that he makes the decision not with anything else in mind.

"He wants a successful end to the season and that might sway him because he knows I love working with him, the boys really love having him around.

"It's important we give him as much time as possible to make a decision. I think the whole pandemic and the situation in the country has been difficult particularly for him, maybe not speaking the language and having his friends around him."
