Arsenal are reportedly weighing up a move to sign Marseille defender Jordan Amavi on a free transfer this summer.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is set to target a left-back in the summer transfer window to provide competition and cover for Kieran Tierney.

And he has been linked with a swoop for Amavi, who has rebuilt his career at Marseille after flopping at Aston Villa.

But Arsenal may have to battle AC Milan for the 26-year-old's signature - while Amavi's current club Marseille are hopeful he will extend his contract.

Amavi's contract is set to expire at the end of this season, so he will become a free agent unless the Ligue 1 club persuade him to stay.

And Arsenal and Milan are among the clubs queuing up to try and tempt him away, according to Le10Sport.

The Gunners need more depth at left-back, with Sead Kolasinac having been loaned out to Schalke.

Regular left-back Tierney has been one of Arsenal's standout stars this season, but the lack of options at the Emirates was exposed when he was out injured recently, with right-footed Cedric Soares standing in for him.

And Amavi has seemingly been identified as an option.

However, Le10Sport reckons Amavi - who turns 27 on Tuesday - will agree to stay at Marseille and will sign a three-year deal.

So it remains to be seen whether an offer from Arsenal can coax him back to the Premier League.

Amavi joined Villa from Nice for £9million in 2015. But he made just 48 appearances for the club before being shipped out on a season-long loan to Marseille in 2017.

The Ligue 1 club signed him permanently from Villa in 2018, and he has since played 121 games, scoring three goals and providing 10 assists.

He played in the Europa League final in 2018, when Marseille were beaten by Atletico Madrid.

He has suffered injury problems this season - and was also one of five players sent off in a row between PSG and Marseille players earlier this season, with Neymar also receiving his marching orders.
