Real Madrid chief Florentino Perez tried to sign Neymar from PSG when his return to Barcelona fell through.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez reportedly tried to sign Neymar from Paris Saint-Germain after Barcelona gave up hope of a transfer, reports say.

Neymar spent the summer transfer window hoping to leave the Parc des Princes for the Nou Camp, just two years after his bitter departure from the Catalan club.

However, the transfer window ended with Neymar having to stay in France after Barcelona gave up hope of signing him.

Talk of the player moving on went quiet late in the window but Catalan newspaper Sport say Real tried signing the 27-year-old at the very last minute.

Perez’s admiration of the forward dates back to Neymar’s time at Santos.

Then, Real were keen on a move with the Samba star even lining up alongside Dani Carvajal during a trial at the Bernabeu.

But Barcelona gazumped them in 2013 in a transfer deal that still attracts attention even now.

The report says Perez started to up the ante when it came to signing Neymar from PSG back in March, shortly after the club’s Champions League exit to Ajax.

And when a move to Barcelona looked dead last week, the Spaniard made his move.

It is claimed that Real told Neymar they were willing to pay him the same blockbuster wages he earns at PSG.

The 27-year-old earns an eyewatering £35million a year while strutting his stuff at the Parc des Princes.

But Neymar said no and, instead, communicated that he would only leave PSG for Barcelona.

Meanwhile, Carvajal has admitted both Neymar and Manchester United’s Paul Pogba were talked about within the club’s dressing room.

“You saw that one day he went to Barca, another day he came with us, another day he stayed,” said Carvajal, speaking to COPE.

“We asked the Brazilians and they told us that he didn't know. I was in doubt. He is a top-five or top-three player. Such a player is welcome on any team.

“Pogba sounded good too. The transfer dates close differently everywhere and in the end he has not arrived.

“We are who we are, and we cannot think of someone who is not with us.”

Neymar is now stuck at PSG until January at the earlies - but whether either Barcelona or Real Madrid go in for the PSG forward this winter remains to be seen.

The Ligue 1 giants would prefer to sell Neymar to Real due to their strained relationship with Barcelona.
