Pressley unimpressed by refereeing as his team bow out of Carabao Cup

Carlisle boss Steven Pressley slammed the standard of refereeing in the lower leagues after his side’s 2-1 defeat at Rochdale in the Carabao Cup.

The visitors, trailing 2-0 at the break, had just pulled a goal back via Jack Bridge’s spot-kick when they were denied what appeared a stonewall penalty when Jimmy Keohane blocked Harry McKirdy’s cross with his arm.

Pressley said afterwards: “The officials got it wrong, 100 per cent, and I can’t for the life of me work out how. I’m going to speak with the Referees Association because I am not satisfied.

“There are a couple of things that frustrate me. Since the new VAR system came in they have promoted referees from lower divisions to the higher divisions and then promoted non-league referees to our league – do we not matter?

“Do decisions against me not affect me? Not affect livelihoods? I think it’s disrespectful and we are suffering because refereeing is of a bad standard at the minute.”

The Scot was impressed by his players, however, adding: “It was an amazing performance from us and if anything it will bolster our confidence.

“We are not far away from being a very good team and tonight underlined that for me against a very good League One side.”

Rochdale took the lead in the 11th minute with a superb 25-yard drive from Aaron Morley and were two up on 31 minutes courtesy of Matt Done.

Bridge slammed home a spot-kick in the 70th minute after Eoghan O’Connell’s foul on McKirdy, who was unfortunate not to earn his side a second goal minutes later.

Dale boss Brian Barry-Murphy said: “It’s great news to get through to the third round.

“The Tuesday night games here so far this season have been very exciting for everybody and this was no exception.

“Carlisle were a credit to themselves and came at us like any good team does in a cup game. But some of our play was exceptional, it was a great game.

“I wouldn’t have had any complaints had Carlisle been awarded a second penalty.

“From where I was standing it appeared like a hand made connection with the ball and it was a difficult moment for our defence, we were under pressure in that moment.”
