Vertonghen exit?

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino left fans scratching their heads on Saturday evening after he dropped Jan Vertonghen - and Spurs legend Rafael van der Vaart thinks the player could have asked for a move away.

The Spurs boss explained his decision on Saturday evening, explaining it was a tactical decision and that the defender was fully fit.

But Van der Vaart thinks Vertonghen may have asked for a move away from the club.

"I'm surprised because he is one of the best players," he said.

"It was strange that he was not in the squad. Maybe something happens and he said he wants to go.

"When he's fit, he's a hundred percent a starting player."

Successful summer for Everton?

Everton's summer transfer business has been slammed by journalist Duncan Castles.

The Toffees strengthened in key areas but missed out on key targets such as Wilfried Zaha.

Castles told Reach Plc's Transfer Window podcast: "The ones you've got to worry about are Everton.

"If you listen to Marco Silva's press conference and read between the lines you'll see how unhappy he has been from what eventually transpired from a window in which Everton spent a lot of money, I have them at about £110m spending gross.

"They were trying to do Zaha up to the end there which would have added another £40m, roughly, given that they took Alex Iwobi from Arsenal instead.

"I think the problem they have is they've allowed a key player, Idrissa Gueye, to go to Paris St-Germain and not replaced with the same quality."

Khedira to Arsenal

Sami Khedira wants a move to Arsenal - and he could still join in the coming weeks.

Of course, the Gunners can not sign the 32-year-old for a fee as the English transfer window has closed.

However, were Juventus to terminate his contract and make him available on a free transfer, he could get his wish.

Khedira wants to be released from his deal in Turin so he can earn a switch to Arsenal, according to CalcioMercato.

Pogba promise

Manchester United star Paul Pogba has promised Ole Gunnar Solskjaer he will not disrupt the dressing room this season if he isn't sold.

The Red Devils ace admitted he wanted to leave earlier in the summer.

But suitors Real Madrid have so far failed to launch a bid for the player's services.

The Daily Mirror claim Pogba has assured the club he will not split the dressing room this year if his move doesn't go through in the coming weeks.

The Frenchman is said to 'respect' United's decision not to sell him.

Ozil US talks

Arsenal star Mesut Ozil could still be off to the United States.

The German continues to be linked with a move to DC United, who have recently agreed to allowing Wayne Rooney to join Derby.

Arsenal bosses are keen to get him off the wage bill and his representatives are this week due to fly to Washington for talks with DC bosses, according to the Express.

Ozil currently earns three times than MLS' highest-paid player LA Galaxy striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Lampard eyeing £70m move

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is considering a £70m swoop for Leicester defender Ben Chilwell once the club's transfer ban is lifted.

The Blues have been unable to sign players this summer due to a FIFA embargo.

But Lampard is already considering how he can improve his squad next year, according to the Sun.

The publication claims Chelsea will look to splash £70m on Chilwell, as the west London outfit attempt to find a replacement for Marcos Alonso, who is considering his future.

Sanchez to Roma?

Manchester United have held talks with Roma over a loan for Alexis Sanchez, according to the Telegraph.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is short in attack after selling Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan and expects Sanchez to stay at Old Trafford.

"I think he'll see this [Lukaku's exit] as an opportunity to make his mark," Solskjaer said. "I do expect him to stay, there's a striker there we think is going to be able to score some goals."

Serie A clubs have until September 2 to sign players.
