Wijnaldum has issued a Champions League battle cry to his Liverpool team-mates

The Reds face Real Madrid on May 26 as they go in search of a sixth European Cup in Kiev.

Wijnaldum is well aware of the expectation among Reds fans with the Champions League final the talk of the town.

Liverpool have not won silverware since the 2012 League Cup and the desire is huge for that barren spell to end.

But the Dutch midfielder knows it's a chance for this team to write their names in the illustrious history at Anfield.

He said: "You can put yourself there with legends that won the Champions League. That's what everyone wants.

"That is what makes it really exciting for us because we have the opportunity now to win a big trophy with a massive club waiting for a lot of years for a trophy.

"We are lucky that we can give them one if we win.

"The only thing we have to do is play our own game and not be nervous. I think then we will make a chance to win the game.

"To be fair it's difficult to not think about it because everyone is talking about the final.

"Even before this game against Brighton, nobody is talking about this game.

"When you see people they were wishing me luck for the final. They didn't wish me luck for against Brighton.

"Everyone reminds you that you're going to play a final. Even if you don't want to think about it, people remind you that you're going to play a final so you will think about it.

"The supporters support the club for many years. It's a big chance for them to win a big trophy, the first in years so of course you know how important and big it is for them but this is also for us.

"We have to make it together, support each other and make the chance even bigger to win the Champions League."

Trent Alexander-Arnold, 19, has had a remarkable season for the Reds playing starring roles in the Champions League clashes against Manchester City and Roma.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is looking forward to facing Cristiano Ronaldo

But now he faces his toughest test – going up against one of the world's best players in Cristiano Ronaldo.

He said: "You know a lot about him and the likes of Lionel Messi because you watch them on YouTube when you're growing up. You always watch those type of players.

"But you've just got to focus on the game and if he's a direct opponent you have to see what the strengths and weaknesses are and use them to your advantage.

"You have to admit he's an unbelievable player and he's done exceptional things in the game.

"The numbers that he does season in, season out are absolutely unbelievable. I embrace the challenge. I want to challenge myself and test myself against the best players in the world and there's not many people better than the likes of Ronaldo."
