Brazil beat Germany four years on

  • Some international friendlies carry more significance than others.

For Brazil, this was no run-of-the-mill run-out.

This was a chance to atone for possibly the darkest day in their footballing history - the day when, four years ago, they were humiliated 7-1 by Germany in the semi-final of their own World Cup.

This was the first meeting of the countries since then - and it provided a degree of closure for Brazil.

A goal from Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus gave Tite's side victory with his header being blocked by goalkeeper Kevin Trapp, but who was unable to prevent the ball crossing the line in the 37th minute.

Jesus had missed a great chance a few seconds before but Brazil were generally good value for their win, their defence in obdurate form.

Their goalkeeper Alisson parried Germany's best effort of the evening away, when he blocked a Toni Kroos shot in stoppage time.

It was Germany's first defeat in 22 matches - one match short of their all-time record.
