  • Newly-promoted La Liga side Girona beat Manchester City from the English Premier League 1-0 to win the Costa Brava Trophy on Tuesday (15th August).

La Liga newcomers Girona defeated Manchester City from the English Premier League 1-0 at home on Tuesday to win the 41st Costa Brava Trophy.

The match was effectively giving both sides match practice ahead of their respective league seasons - although City did open their campaign with a 2-0 win at Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.

The friendly was part of a four-day training camp for City - with reports suggesting that Girona could be about to be bought by City's parent company, City Football Group.

Girona have taken four City players on loan this season and striker Olarenwaju Kayode is expected to become a fifth when he completes his move to City from Austria Vienna.

Right from the off it seemed that the home side were determined to underline that they can hold their own in their first season in La Liga - goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz pulled off a smart stop after nine minutes to keep out a Raheem Sterling shot.

And five minutes later, Girona took the lead.

Aday's cross evaded the falling Leroy Sane, the ball travelled into the path of striker Portu, who applied a neat finish past Claudio Bravo in the City goal.

City had their Chilean goalkeeper to thank for not going into the interval two goals down - Bravo saved low down to parry a shot from Girona's new signing from Middlesbrough, Cristhian Stuani.
The home side easily held their own in the second half, but the longer the match went on, the more City came into things as an attacking force.

Defender Tosin Adarabioyo almost headed them level, while Bernardo Silva was denied by the feet of Iraizoz.

There was still time for Gabriel Jesus to graze the Girona crossbar with a long-range shot in stoppage time, but Girona held on for a deserved win.

The most City could say about their somewhat muted performance was that there seemed to be no injuries to worry about.

Girona start their La Liga campaign at home to Atletico Madrid on Saturday (19th August).

City have a six-day wait before they are next in action - they take on Everton at home next Monday (21st August).
