Gremio beat Godoy Cruz to reach Copa quarter-finals

Thursday, August 10 2017 by 7MTV
  • Brazil's Gremio came from behind to defeat Godoy Cruz from Argentina 2-1 and reach the quarter-finals of the Copa Libertadores 3-1 on aggregate on Wednesday (9th August).

Any Brazil versus Argentina footballing contest is full of passion, drama and action.

    This one was no different.

Gremio were a goal up on Argentine opponents Godoy Cruz from the first leg of their last 16 tie in the Copa Libertadores so knew they just had to see the second leg out safely to progress to the quarter-finals.

That plan went out of the window after 14 minutes.

That's because Godoy Cruz took the lead with a breathtaking goal from Javier Correa who let fly with a dipping shot from 30 yards out which crashed in off the underside of the bar and send the Godoy fans wild.

Gremio hit back and pulled level when the dangerous Pedro Rocha took full advantage of a goalkeeping howler from Leonardo Burian who spilled a harmless shot at Rocha's feet.

Rocha almost gave the Brazilian side the lead just before half-time as he rounded off a flowing team move only for his shot to hit the bar.

But the striker made amends in the second half, in the right place at the right time to tap in a pass from Lucas Barrios.

Gremio held on and now meet either fellow Brazilians Botafogo or Nacional from Uruguay in the last eight.
