Tuchel "thrilled" with Real Madrid showdown

Saturday, August 27 2016 by SNTV
  • Borussia Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel says he is looking forward to his side's Champions League clash with real Madrid , after they were drawn in the same group. Dortmund begin their domestic campaign with an opening Bundesliga 1 fixture against Mainz.

SOUNDBITE (German): Thomas Tuchel, Borussia Dortmund coach:

    (On the Champions League group)

"It was my first Champions League draw and of course we followed the draw. The first draw we were still on the training pitch, packing up. Then we knew we would play against Real (Madrid), so we thought about calling the team out of the locker room again to practise a few 16-metre runs (laughs), but decided against that. Sporting (Lisbon) also is very attractive - great city, great tradition. I think they have just signed Bas Dost (note - unconfirmed!!) and in Warsaw (against Legia) we will have an amazing atmosphere."

    (On Real Madrid)

"I was there years ago in the stadium as a spectator and I am thrilled that I am given the opportunity and have the luck to go there to stand in the coaching zone and to go there with a team that will have a chance to win and that will play for that. I feel that to get this game is first and foremost great luck and I am very happy about that."

SOUNDBITE (German): Thomas Tuchel, Borussia Dortmund coach:

(On the Dortmund team and how Tuchel looks at the new season)

"The last (week) and this training week gives me a good feeling because the basics are working, the team gives me the impression that they can push each other up to a high level that they develop a positive energy and that there is a good atmosphere. Their timing is good and, like in the cup game against Trier, do not even think about their role as a favourites and just do their thing."

SOUNDBITE (German): Thomas Tuchel, Borussia Dortmund coach:

    (On Mainz)

"Their preparation had its ups and downs. There was a spectacular 4-0 win against Liverpool and there were clear losses. We are expecting them to show a lot compactness, strong defence and switch their game. They played an outstanding last season, qualified internationally, and we expect them to play bravely and compactly and will define themselves by being strong one-on-one. And we need to find solutions for that and to prepare well."
