  • After two weeks of emotion, medals and sporting history, athletes from around the world have begun returning home from Brazil.

Russia's Olympic team were greeted by supporters and official figures upon their arrival back in Moscow. However Russia have been banned from the Paralympic Games, as punishment over their state-backed doping programme.

Elsewhere, in Puerto Rico - gold medalist Monica Puig touched down to a heroes welcome.

Puig was honoured by her country's government and local residents in San Juan on Tuesday - after becoming Puerto Rico's first Olympic gold medal winner - defeating Germany's Angelique Kerber in the women's tennis singles gold medal match.

And in Indonesia, the badminton mixed doubles gold medallists were personally congratulated by the Indonesia president - at a reception at the presidential palace in Jakarta.

Meanwhile the Olympic flag arrived in Tokyo, host of the next Summer Games.

Preparations are already underway for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, with the construction of the main stadium is scheduled to start later in the year. Japan's capital also hosted the Olympics in 1964.
