Britain's Olympians make hero's return

Wednesday, August 24 2016 by SNTV
  • Britain's gold medallists believe their Rio triumph will provide a springboard for future glory after their most successful Olympic campaign. The team picked up a total of 27 gold, 23 silver and 17 bronze medals in the summer Olympics in Brazil.

SOUNDBITE (English) Alistair Brownlee, Olympic gold medallist in triathlon (on encouraging people to try triathlon):

"We do feel it's a very important job for us to get people involved. We're passionate about encouraging and trying to inspire people to do triathlon, a sport that's had such a big effect on our lives. We realise we've got a big role and we work hard to try to encourage people to have a go."

SOUNDBITE (English) Jonny Brownlee, Olympic silver medallist in triathlon (on his future goals):

"Tokyo is obviously an aim but four years is a long time. I've got a few more races this year. Next year I'll try to become world champion then next year it's the Commonwealth Games and then hopefully Tokyo."

SOUNDBITE (English) Adam Peaty, Olympic gold medallist in swimming, 100 metre breaststroke (on inspiring the next generation):

"That means so much to me. It's one of my main motivations. A kid came up to me earlier and said 'I'm going to go swimming tonight and do breaststroke.' What more could you want than that to motivate you and to push on, put this behind us and move on."

SOUNDBITE (English) Adam Peaty, Olympic gold medallist in swimming, 100 metre breaststroke (on what he can achieve in his future):

"Who knows? It's going to be pretty crazy I think. I've got a good support team around me, good family around me. Hopefully we'll start to ground it and move on and see what I can do in the next four years."

SOUNDBITE (English) Hannah Mills, Olympic gold medallist in sailing, 470 class (on hopefully getting more focus on sport in schools):

"Hopefully it does inspire a lot of people to try different sports and try to get involved in your local community in the sports area because it's so good, especially for kids. I really hope schools and education systems change a little bit and P.E. departments grow. I just think it can be such an inspirational thing in young children's lives."

SOUNDBITE (English) Heather Stanning, Olympic gold medallist in rowing, coxless pair (on inspiring people):

"That's what makes this so brilliant and even more special, knowing what we've done makes people think 'we can give that a go.' Whether it's rowing or another sport, I do think it's important for people to think 'what can I do.' They may not have inspirations to be an Olympic champion but they may have aspirations to get fitter and live a healthier lifestyle and that's important as well. If there's someone out there that can go become an Olympic athlete then that is brilliant."

SOUNDBITE (English) Heather Stanning and Helen Glover, Olympic gold medallists in rowing, coxless pair (on their future):
    Heather Stanning:

"I think it's similar to 2012, I'll return to work with the army for a time and Helen is going to have a bit of time off as well. We'll wait until this has all calmed down a bit and make our decision on Tokyo in a calmer environment."

SOUNDBITE Helen Glover: (English) Olympic gold medallist

"Same here. I think we'll wait and see. Live a little but of a normal life because it's been a really tough period of training mentally and physically. So just to get a break and enjoy it."

SOUNDBITE (English) Chris Mears, Olympic gold medallists in diving, synchronised 3 metre springboard (on being the new poster boys of GB diving):

"I think that's pretty awesome. Obviously Tom (Daley) has brought a lot of media attention and support to the diving community and to team GB. It has been fantastic and we've certainly felt that growth in the amount of people that have watched the sport. It is great for us because we're very passionate about it but it's also brought us a lot of social media followers and we're very grateful for that. I think at these games we've come and we've shown Tom Daley isn't the only successful diver out there. There are other divers out there that are working really hard. Not just us, you've got Daniel Goodfellow out their who also medalled. All of our divers are looking really strong so I'm really excited for our future."
