Apology made to Australian athletes

Monday, August 22 2016 by SNTV
  • Team Australia's chef de mission Kitty Chiller told a news conference on Sunday (21st August) that the Australian Olympic Committee has apologised to the nine athletes who were detained by Rio Police, after an accreditation mix-up at a basketball game.

SOUNDBITE (English) Kitty Chiller, Australia chef de mission (team leader):

"They're all fine, obviously, it was a horrific experience, and we have apologised, and I and others apologized to them face-to-face for what they had to go through. It was our mistake, but they are fine now, and we are doing our absolute best to ensure that they can be on that charter with us tomorrow (Monday)."

SOUNDBITE (English) Kitty Chiller, Australia chef de mission (team leader):

"As regards the error occurred, it's still under investigation, so I won't be talking about that component of it now. It's a public holiday in Rio tomorrow, and it's actually physically not possible to have the fine paid and the passports delivered tomorrow. Our latest understanding, just a few minutes ago, is that we will need to drive out of Rio to make the payment and collect the passports. I am not quite sure of the actual logistics of that, but as I said we are doing absolutely everything we can, if that means driving out of Rio we would do that to make sure they can get on the plane."
