German rowers reflect on Olympic triumphs

Saturday, August 13 2016 by SNTV
  • Germany's latest gold medal winners in rowing and rifle events spoke on Friday (12th August), a day after their medal-winning performances.

SOUNDBITE: (German) Philipp Wende, men's quadruple sculls gold medal winner:

"We were happy that the decision was taken to cancel the final on the day before yesterday, because it would have been only fair in the sense that everyone has the same bad conditions. So, it would not have been about who has the physical strength, but about who is lucky enough to get past (or over) the waves. So, that is why we were happy that the decision was taken to postpone the final for one day. However, there were still difficult conditions, but it was fair for all participating rowers. In particular in the first half of the race, we have proved that we were able to cope with the conditions, certainly because of our physical strength."

SOUNDBITE: (German) Carina Baer, women's quadruple sculls gold medal winner:

"After London the feeling was already quite a good one. I was quite young back then at 22. So, it was good, but there was also still an option to perform and do it even better. And then in 2013 and 2014 we saw that we can indeed make it to the top. And this was our aim and we worked towards this over the last three to four years. And it feels good that we have finally made it."
