Ashwin: "It was a hard fought day"

Friday, August 12 2016 by SNTV
  • Ravichandran Ashwin reflects on his fourth Test century, his 213-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Wriddhiman Saha and the state of the third Test against West Indies at stumps on the second day in St. Lucia

    SOUNDBITE: (English) Ravichandran Ashwin, India:

    (on his century)

"It is indeed. If you look in the hindsight or later on probably in the series, this could very well be a series defining knock actually to my knowledge. Because we were in some trouble and there was every chance that we could have got skittled out. And also I thought it needed a bit of application and it is not like making a hundred back home or anywhere else in the world, I'm sure about that. Because this is definitely, it was a hard fought day yesterday and it is no different today. We just hope that we can capitalize on that rearguard action later tomorrow."

    SOUNDBITE: (English) Ravichandran Ashwin, India:

    (on his batting)

"My goal is very simple. If I get a good start, if I get 20 runs then I'm gonna try and capitalize on that, I'm going to play percentage cricket. So it's all about trying and playing percentages, try and string a partnership and not look too far ahead in the game. That's pretty important I guess and something which I definitely tried to do is bat sessions... if you try and bat sessions, there have been times where I have batted couple of sessions and got a hundred, or less than two sessions and got a hundred when I initially played. So this is kind of different, but I do enjoy it, it is time consuming, concentration consuming, but it is enjoyable."

    SOUNDBITE: (English) Ravichandran Ashwin, India:

(on West Indies coming back strongly)

"I believe they got some momentum after the Jamaica test, but that is how Test cricket is, right? We didn't come over here expecting to roll them over, honestly as a Test team, they are also a Test team. And in their home conditions it's going to be hard and we expected it."

    SOUNDBITE: (English) Ravichandran Ashwin, India:

(on the plan for Day Three)

"I thought we bowled pretty well, pulled things back at the end of the day today. If we can extract the same amount of control tomorrow we might... you never know, it could be the first session or the second session, but I'm definitely sure that we will get the reward for what we showed today."
