Williamson becomes youngest player to score a century against all Test-playing nations

  • At the age of 26, Kane Willamson's 113 in New Zealand's first innings of 582 for 4 declared made him the youngest player to score a century against all nine Test-playing nations.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson reflects on his side's 2-0 series win over Zimbabwe in Bulawayo on Wednesday (10th August) and looks ahead to the 'Black Caps'' upcoming two Test tour of South Africa.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Kane Williamson, New Zealand captain:(on New Zealand's 254-run win over Zimbabwe in the second Test and the contribution made by the spinners)

"Yeah, it was a fantastic effort, I think initially, with the seamers doing the job in the first innings, we could tell that the wicket was deteriorating, it was a little bit slower than the first surface and it was breaking up, so look, it was a good toss to win, to be able to bowl in the last innings and not only are you presented with good conditions, you do have to bowl well on it and I think the way the spinners stood up today was a fantastic effort. IS Sodhi bowled beautifully, Mitch Satner and also Martin Guptill, who hasn't bowled too much in the past and made things very difficult."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Kane Williamson, New Zealand captain:(on Martin Guptill's bowling - he took 3-11 from seven overs, despite being only an occasional spinner)

"I thought maybe he's been practicing a bit when nobody's been watching, because hwe don't see him bowl too much in the nets, but I mean geez, after today, the way he bowled, it was... yeah, the wicket was suited to it, but to be able to put the ball in a consistent area and spin it hard as a part-tim 'offie' (off-spinner) is something that's fantstic to see and another string to his bow and I'm sure he'll be continuing to work on it."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Kane Williamson, New Zealand captain:(on New Zealand's batting in this Test)

"I think the batting was very clinical, big runs were required, because we knew that Zimbabwe would fight and certianly fight a lot harder than perhaps the first innings of the first Test. They showed it in the second innings and they certainly showed it again in the first innings, where they made us work very hard to take the first ten wickets and you know, we were fortunate that the wicket was extremely togh to bat on today, which was in our favour. So they certainly showed huge signs of improvement, which is a big positive for them, and for us it was nice to, I suppose, see our seamers put in the yards on a surface that didn't offer a huge amount for them, but also the spinners to take control in that last innings, which is always what you want to see in a Test match, see spin come into play."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Kane Williamson, New Zealand captain:(on the positives New Zealand can take from the Zimbabwe series into the upcoming tour of South Africa)

"Look, I think there were some really good things that we can take from this series into that series, like I mentioned, the way the seamers bowled was fantastic, our batsmen spent a long time out in the middle, which was another positive and also for spin to come into it and show their strengths on a wicket that offered turn, they are all good things, but at the same time, you know, different opposition, different conditions, so I guess those learnings are positives, but you know, the approach will be different, preparations will be different once again. It's not starting fresh, but looking at what's coming up and preparing accordingly."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Kane Williamson, New Zealand captain:(on New Zealand's strenghth in depth and the options for the side against South Africa)

"You know here, in Bulawayo, looking at the surface, certainly is a big part of how you pick the side and going to Durban now, we're going to have to assess the conditions there and what side we thing is suited to those conditions, so... you know, it's nice to have, I guess, that depth, with some good seam bowlers on tour here that haven't had a go yet and also a very good off-spinner in Mark Craig that hasn't got a go, so there's plenty of options when it comes to that first Test in Durban."
