Cook praises England resilience

Monday, August 08 2016 by SNTV
  • Reaction from England captain Alastair Cook and Moeen Ali after England beat Pakistan by 141 runs in the third Test at Edgbaston on Sunday (7th August) to lead the series 2-1.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Alastair Cook, England captain:

(about the resilience the team has shown):

"Yes I don't think we were in quite as much trouble as everyone was writing about and asking us. I spoke at tea time on day one to the team about this being the first in a fourth innings game. You know 300 was probably 30 or 40 short on that wicket it definitely was the hardest time to bat that day, day one of that game there no doubt about that. The ball zipped through a little bit more. Then it was a matter of trying to...because of that of that we were always behind the eight ball on that heavy roll or that first heavy roll on day two really took that pace out of the wicket. But thought you know 340 for three wasn't great but it wasn't dreadful - we just knew that when we got out chance to bat on the second innings we had to go big. Normally if someone gets a big hundred then everyone else bats round but everyone contributed to that and it was kind of that the way bowled on day three when to me you know that was when we got ourselves back in... not back in the game but started to. We could have easily have not cruised like the guys saw at the beginning of day three but that was such a crucial day for us. And to be 140-7 we bowled them out for. You know we bowled them really well on that day. Didn't give them too much and then yes we know if we could bat well which we're definitely capable of doing we'd take them deep. They will be bating for... when it's very hard on day five when you can't win a game."
