Lawrie through at his own event

  • Top seed Chris Wood and third seed Matt Fitzpatrick progressed to the second round of the Paul Lawrie Match Play, while other seeds faltered on Friday (4th August).

English golfers Chris Wood and Matt Fitzpatrick eased to first-round wins at the Paul Lawrie Match Play in Archerfield, Scotland on Thursday (4th August) as the pair look for a tournament victory that would cement a place in Europe's Ryder Cup team.

Wood recovered from losing the first hole to Brett Rumford to win 4 and 3 and will face Daniel Brooks in the next stage.

Whilst Fitzpatrick surged into a 6-hole lead after nine holes before closing out a 4 and 3 win over Thomas Bjorn and will play Matt Ford on Friday (5th August).

Wood is the top-seeded player at Archerfield and, like Fitzpatrick, currently occupies a spot in the European team for the Ryder Cup at Hazeltine next month.

Eighth seed Richie Ramsay overcame a late fightback from 2015 semi-finalist David Howell to win by one hole. A brilliant approach on the 18th helped his cause.

Tournament host Paul Lawrie made it through to the last 32 by beating Lucas Bjerregaard 4 and 2 and faces Richard Green on Friday.

Second seed Alex Noren didn't drop a shot in the 14 holes he had to play. The Swede won 5 and 4 win over Scott Jamieson.
