Lehmann 'excited and humbled' to continue as Australia head coach

Tuesday, August 02 2016 by SNTV
  • Darren Lehmann will remain as coach of Australia's cricket team until at least 2019, after agreeing an extension to his current contract with Cricket Australia, it was announced on Monday (1st August).

SOUNDBITE: (English) Darren Lehmann, Australia coach:

Question: 'Congratulations on your reappointment as Australia's men's team coach. What are your thoughts on the announcement?'

"Oh, excitement, humbled. The support I've... firstly received from my family for the next little journey and what I've done so far, but also support from the board (Australian Cricket Board), the players and the fans to entrust me again for another few years. Really looking forward to the challenge ahead, we've got some unfinished business to do over that term and for me it's trying to get them (the players) to play better cricket as we always try and do."

Question: 'There has been some notable achievements in that time, obviously a World Cup and number one ranking, the 5-0 Ashes win, but are there things that are still burning that you want to achieve over the next period?'

"Yeah, obviously we want to play better in the subcontinent. That's very much publicised anyway. Win away from home more, play well at home, continue to play an entertaining brand of cricket that people love to come and watch, that's really important to us. We want to grow the game as best we can as a group of... not only coaches, but staff and players, we want to make sure that everyone's coming through the gates enjoying the Australian cricket team."

Question: 'And obviously seeing as the Ashes 2019 is the appointment, can you see yourself in a fairly gruelling job going beyond then, for another term?'

"Oh look, I'll just get through these next few years, first and foremost, and hope to have some success, then we'll see what happens from there, but from my point of view, it's a great challenge, still the best job in the world. I love it and there are highs and lows in any job, so for me hopefully, there are more highs and really learn from our mistakes and keep improving."
