  • Novak Djokovic beat Kei Nishikori in straight sets on Sunday (31st July) to win his fourth Rogers Cup title in Toronto.

Novak Djokovic met Kei Nishikori in the final of the Rogers Cup in Toronto on Sunday seeking his ninth consecutive win over the Japanese star.

Nishikori had impressed in beating Stan Wawrinka in the semi-finals, but the world number one stood between him and a first ATP Masters title.

Djokovic broke to lead 4-2 and served out to take the first set 6-3, the Serb showing typical athleticism and resilience on set point.

The match appeared to be all but over when Djokovic broke to lead 2-1 in the second set, but the third seed fought back to level at three games apiece.

In the 11th game, Nishikori's serve failed him when he needed it most with Djokovic breaking to move to the brink of victory.

Nishikori saved two match points but he could not save a third as Djokovic won 6-3 7-5 to clinch his fourth Rogers Cup and his 30th ATP Masters title.

Next up for the record-breaking 29-year-old is a trip to Rio de Janeiro to try to win the Olympic title which has so far deserted him.

Djokovic took bronze in Beijing in 2008, losing to eventual gold medallist Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals.

In London 2012 he again fell in the semi-finals to the eventual champion - home favourite Andy Murray - before losing the bronze medal play-off to Juan Martin del Potro.
