Kucova cuts Konta run

Sunday, July 31 2016 by SNTV
  • Qualifier Kristina Kucova has knocked Johanna Konta, the British world no 14, out of the Rogers Cup in a dream week for the Slovak semifinalist on Friday (29th July).

Johanna Konta has been knocked out of the Rogers Cup in Montreal by a qualifier ranked 121 in the world.

The Brit's great run of form - which saw her win her first WTA Tour title in Stanford last week - came to an end when she met Slovakian Kristina Kucova in the quarterfinals of the world's third oldest tennis tournament on Friday (29th July).

A win would have seen Konta become the first British woman to be ranked in the top 10 in 32 years.

But Kucova was faultless, unlike her opponent, who was raging against line calls and the world by the end. The Slovak's 6-4, 6-3 win continues a brilliant week which also saw her beat home favourite Eugenie Bouchard in the third round.

She goes on to face no 10 seed Madison Keys in the Semifinals on Saturday, after the American beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in three sets.
