Wawrinka moves closer to Toronto final

Saturday, July 30 2016 by SNTV
  • Stan Wawrinka beat Kevin Anderson in straight sets in Toronto on Friday (29th July) to reach the last four of the Rogers Cup.

    Second seed Stan Wawrinka will attempt to reach his fourth ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final on Saturday at the Rogers Cup against third seed Kei Nishikori.

    Wawrinka overcame former world number 10 Kevin Anderson 6-1, 6-3 in 74 minutes on Friday in their quarter-final.

    Wawrinka got off to a perfect start by opening up a 4-0 lead against Anderson, who endured a 10-week injury layoff earlier in the season.

    The Swiss star broke for a third time to seal the 30-minute opener and, in a competitive second set, converted his second break point opportunity for a 5-3 advantage.

    Shots like this meant Wawrika was always going to reach the final.

    A strong serve was all it took to book the Swiss star's route to the final;

    Wawrinka hit 14 winners and lost only five of his first service points.
