  • Kitty Chiller insists that "the Games will be a better place without them" when hearing about the suspension of Russian weightlifters for the Rio Olympics.

(on the news that the Russia weightlifting team has been banned from Rio due to doping offences) "No I'm not surprised that any cheats are being kicked out. That was the purpose of the IOC decision a few days ago, to weed out all of those cheats and the criteria that they had to overcome and the hurdles that they had to overcome to actually prove that they were clean and there are now 117 athletes across ten sports who have not been able to prove that they are clean. Two sports, which are athletics and weightlifting have had their entire delegations wiped out. They're the cheats, we don't want them here so the Games will be a better place without them."

    2. 00:29 SOUNDBITE: (English) Kitty Chiller, Australia Chef de Mission
(on the suggestion that Russia might appeal their ban in the women's eight rowing competition, and the knock on effect that would have on Australia) "From what we understand and we've spoken to our President and IOC Vice President John Coates, there is no right of appeal for any of these Russian athletes. The IOC under their charter has the ability to not accept any entries into the Games and there is no ability to appeal any decision made by the IOC under the charter. So as far as we're concerned (there is) no right of appeal and our women's eight will be in."

    3. 00:52 SOUNDBITE: (English) Kitty Chiller, Australia Chef de Mission
(on withdrawals of diver Brittany Broben and sprinter Josh Clarke) "Diver Brittany Broben who won a silver medal in London was forced to withdraw overnight with an ongoing shoulder injury and also Josh Clarke, our 100 metre runner suffered a hamstring injury a little while ago and he has also withdrawn overnight so I really feel for Brittany and Josh and wish them both a very speedy recovery."
