Refugee Olympic team arrive in Rio

  • Five South Sudanese refugee runners flew into Rio from Kenya on Friday (29th July) ahead of the IOC's 10-member refugee team taking part in the Olympics.

    "My dream has come true and I'm very excited because it's the first time we can participate in the Olympics and we are really happy."

    "This is the first time refugees can participate in the Olympics. Also it is the first time I'll participate. I am very grateful. I hope that...being a refugee doesn't mean we can't do anything. Refugees are human beings like other people. Refugees can do something like somebody else."

    "It means a lot because the president of the IOC realised that there's a need for an athlete with a refugee status to compete at the Olympics."
