  • Australian field hockey star Jamie Dwyer said on Thursday (28th July) his side would be "a tough team to beat" in the men's competition at the Rio Olympics.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Jamie Dwyer, Australia field hockey player:
    (on Australia's chance)

"I think, yeah, of course the main outcome would be great to win a gold medal, but I think one of the main focuses is, for us, is to improve throughout the tournament, that's for sure, and to play to our potential. I think we all know and we all believe that if we play to how we know we can play, we going to be a tough team to beat. But saying that, Germany, Holland, Great Britain and Belgium, I believe are all realistic chances of, realistic chances of winning a gold medal, but you know, if we play our best, which I'm hoping we do, the outcome will take care of itself."

SOUNDBITE (English) Jamie Dwyer, Australia field hockey player:

(on concerns about being in Rio de Janeiro)

"Yeah, I didn't have any concerns at all about coming here to these Olympic Games and now I'm here, I feel very safe and you know, it's what I expected, I thought that it had just been a few of those negative comments blown out of proportion a little bit, I looked into it a little bit, and I was fine to come here and now I'm here, yeah, I'm happy I'm here, that's for sure. If for those athletes who did pull out, I guess that was their choice, I can't comment for them but it was their decision and maybe they'll regret it, maybe not, I'm not too sure but I'm happy I'm here and yeah."
