Olympic torch extinguished by Rio protests at government

Friday, July 29 2016 by SNTV
  • Scuffles between the police and protesters erupted in Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro state, on Wednesday night (local time - 27th July), while the Olympic torch was touring the city.

The Olympic Torch continues its troubled progress to its final destination in central Rio de Janeiro.

August the 5th and the end of that journey cannot come quick enough for organisers.

On Wednesday, protesters blocked the path of the torch.

A local event to celebrate the arrival of the torch thus had to be cancelled.

Brazilians were voicing their anger at public healthcare in the city, and videos online appeared to show the torch was put out for a time in the Japuíba neighbourhood.

Those demonstrators were on the streets due to the economic crisis - including many government employees who have not been paid by the state of Rio for many weeks.

Others deplore the vast amounts of money spent on the Olympics.

Wednesday's disturbance is the latest episode in the torches troublesome tour around the country since it arrived in Brazil, having been lit in Athens, on May 3.
