Friday, July 29 2016 by SNTV
  • International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach is confident all the issues about the suitabilty of the Olympic Village will be resolved after a visit to the athletes' accomomodation. The build-up to the games have been marred by Australia's team initially booking in to a hotel after their arrival.

The president of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach. was in Rio de Janeiro to visit the new site that will house the Olympic flame and cauldron.

But his visit was overshadowed by the situation of the apartments at the Olympic Village, after the 700-member of the Australian delegation refused to check in because of unsuitable conditions.

SOUNDBITE (English) Thomas Bach , president of the International Olympic Committee:

" In the last couple of days before the Olympic games there are always some challenges to be addressed and we have seen them also here lately, but if you see the animation of the Brazilians to address these challenges -- I was speaking today with the athletes and the team leaders in the Olympic village and they showed me their apartment and told me how it looked yesterday and how pleased they are with the apartments 24 hours after and how pleased they are with the living conditions in the Olympic village. This makes everybody very confident that the remaining ones (apartments) will be solved in the next 24 or 48 hours."

The situation in the Olympic village has marred the build-up to next month's Games. Having visited the village on Thursday - Bach is confident the situation will be resolved.

SOUNDBITE (English) Thomas Bach , president of the International Olympic Committee:

"I went to the Olympic village and to pay my respects to the athletes in the Olympic villa, where they started to assemble and it was really a great experience that after all the challenges they were (had) - how enthusiastic the athletes are about being here and how confident they are that it will be great games."

Rio de Janeiro's mayor, Eduardo Paes, had appeared to downplay Australia's complaints over conditions in the village, but he struck a more sympathetic tone.

With nine days until the opening ceremony, only a fraction of the team members expected for the Games have arrived, with the bulk of them due next week.
