  • Members of the human rights group Amnesty International protested on Wednesday (July 27th), outside the Rio 2016 headquarters, against killings committed by the police during the sport's big events in the city.

More killings occur in the city of Rio de Janerio in the run-up to big events, that was the line according to Amnesty International.

On Wednesday, members of the human rights group protested outside the Rio 2016 headquarters against recent murders.

They believe, a huge increase in the number of people reportedly killed by police officers in the city of Rio de Janeiro has occurred due to the proximity of the Olympics has laid bare the security services' chilling disregard for the right of life.

One member of Amnesty International Brazil, Renata Neder, spoke of the movements concern.

"Our worry in relation to the Olympic Games is with the increase of the police violence in the city. We have the experience and have seen in Rio de Janeiro during the Pan-American Games in 2007 and during the World Cup in 2014, that in the years that mega sportive events take place there is an important increase on the number of people killed by the police in the city and the state of Rio."

During May 2016 that amounted an approximate increase of 135% on the same period last year, when 17 were people killed by police.

Across the Rio state as a whole, the deaths almost doubled from 44 to 84.
