Australian rowers to "get on with the job"

Thursday, July 28 2016 by SNTV
  • Two members of the Australian women's eight gave their reaction on Wednesday (27th July) after being included in the Olympics at the expense of Russia.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Sarah Banting, Australian rower:

"It's not ideal, but although we've been doing individual training at our home bases, everyone has managed to stay fit and we all met together on Saturday here in Melbourne, and we've been in the boat since then. So, as I said earlier, the targeted training over the next ten days or so should see us ready for Rio."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Fiona Albert, Australian Rower:

"We don't have the luxury of time to get our heads in a spin about this, that and the other, all we have to do is prepare ourselves the best possible way we can so that we show up on the start line ready to race. And now we've got more racing experience behind us having gone through the qualification regatta experience and I think that's going to set us up incredibly well to just show up on that start line and give it our all, all which you would expecting nothing less from any Australian crew."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Fiona Albert, Australian rower:

"I guess in this regard, we're reliant on international sporting organisations to do the best to ensure the integrity of the sport is upheld. Obviously every athlete who goes through an Olympic Games it's an emotional roller-coaster no matter what situation you find yourself in. But just as I'm sure those girls (Russians) were going to do, we just have the responsibly to get on with the job and to get on with training, and that just has to be our focus for the next little while if we are going to produce our best performance. So yeah, we look to the international sporting organisations like the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the World Anti-Doping Authority (WADA) to ensure the integrity of our sport is upheld and in the meantime we just have to get on with training."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Fiona Albert, Australian rower:

"It's a really hard situation to find yourself in just as we found ourselves in on May 24th when we missed out on, on that qualifying spot, and I know, well we both know, what that feels like and how absolutely devastating it is to have your Olympic dream wrenched away from you and no one can deny that that's an incredibly horrible feeling no matter how it comes about. So, yeah, while we're definitely sympathetic for those girls (Russians) it's not something that's in our control and all we can do is control what we can which is our training."
