  • Gael Monfils moved into the second round of the ATP Rogers Cup after he beat Joao Sousa in Toronto on Tuesday. Tomas Berdych moved into the third round with victory over Borna Coric. Canada's Vasek Pospisil beat Jeremy Chardy after the Frenchman retired with an injury and Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka beat Russia's Mikhail Youzhny.

Gael Monfils began his ATP Rogers Cup campaign in impressive style.

The flamboyant Frenchman beat Joao Sousa in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.

Monfils has now won eight matches in a row, and will take on Vasek Pospisil in the second round.

Pospisil defeated Jeremy Chardy in the first-round after the Frenchman retired following a right foot injury.

Chardy started to struggle after Pospisil went up 30-0 in the first game of the second set. Chardy called for the trainer and waited several minutes before deciding that he couldn't go on.

Tomas Berdych had to fight hard to reach the third round against Borna Coric.

Croatian Coric won the first set 6-4, before the fifth seed fought back taking the second 6-1, and with the momentum behind him closed out victory with just a single break to win 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Tournament No. 2 seed Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland held off Russian Mikhail Youzhny 7-6 (3), 7-6 (8)

He goes through to the third round in Toronto.
