Leicester claim penalties win over Celtic

  • Leicester City beat Celtic 6-5 on penalties in their International Champions Cup match on Saturday after playing out a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes.

    The Scottish Premier league champions Celtic met their English counterparts Leicester City at Parkhead on Saturday in the International champions Cup with Celtic in between important Champions League qualifiers with a tripto face FC Astana in Kazakhstan next Wednesday

    Both sides created chances in an open first 45 minutes - for Celtic, a cross from Emilio Izaguirre found its way to Moussa Dembele who forced a save from new Leicsetre keeper Ron-Robert Zieler.

    At the other end, Riyad Mahrez crafted Leicester's best opening, finding an unmarked Ben Chilwell.

    A free kick from Leigh Griffiths brought another fine save from Zieler to keep the game goalless at half-time,

    But that was to change soon after the break. Riyad Mahrez cut back from the right before curling a left foot shot inside the far post to make it 1-0 to the Foxes in the 46th minute.

    Celtic weren't behind for too long - a number of blocks in the area eventually saw the ball fall to Eoghan O'Connell, who steered in the equaliser in the 59th minute

    The English chmpions had a great chance to seal the win near the end, but Shinji Okazaki headed over from Danny Simpson's cross to send the match to penalties.

    With both sides scoring their five spot kicks, it was down to sudden death.

    Leicester substitute goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel dived to his left to deny Celtic's James Forrest.

    Leaving Daniel Amartey to step up to coolly beat Celtic substitute goalkeeper Leonardo Fasan and clinch a 6-5 win on penalties.
