  • Celebrations in Tokyo on Sunday (24th July) marked four years until the city hosts the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Just over a week to go until the opening ceremonies of the Rio Olympics, but these children in Tokyo are already looking forward to 2020, when the Japanese capital will host the Summer Games.

On Sunday, organisers held a "Four Years To Go" ceremony for Tokyo 2020.

Children made 2,020 origami paper cranes - traditional Japanese messages of hope - into a giant globe.

Two-time gold medalist Yoshinobu Miyake took his first weightliting gold in Tokyo 1964. The 79-year-old reminisced about a quite different Olympic games.

(Japanese) Yoshinobu Miyake, double Olympic weightlifting gold medallist (on competing at 1964 Tokyo Olympics):

"At the time there were no facilities, no barbells, nothing to eat, not even coaches. You didn't have coaches to count on so you had to do everything on your own. I think this goes for all the sports, not just weightlifting.

Q - There were no coaches?

"No. So compared to those times - this 2020 feels like a dream. I think it's a dream within a dream."

Athens and Beijing Olympic judo champion Ayumi Tanimoto also spoke of her excitement at the ceremony.

"All Olympic athletes have had to overcome these situations, so I hope everyone will compete with an air of victory."

The 2020 Summer Olympics will take place from July 24th and August 9th.

Tokyo defeated Madrid and Istanbul in the IOC voting for hosting rights.
