Putin "not expected" to attend Olympic Games- Russia's Consulate General to Rio

  • Russia's Consulate General to Rio de Janeiro, Vladimir Tokmakov, said on Monday (25th July) that President Vladimir Putin was not expected to attend the Olympic Games in the city next month.

    SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Vladimir Tokmakov, Russian Consul General to Rio de Janeiro: (On International Olympic Committee's decision not to ban all athletes from Rio Olympics)

    "Our reaction is positive because it was a fair decision and we had no doubts that the Russian team should be allowed to participate in the Olympic Games. So of course we are very happy to receive our athletes here (in Rio) and we will help our team members and (Russian) tourists.

    SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Vladimir Tokmakov, Russian Consul General to Rio de Janeiro:

    "This (decision by the IOC) confirms that these Olympic Games must be sporting games and not political ones."

    "According to the information that we have, President Putin won't be coming to Brazil because of his schedule which had already been planned."

    "We are absolutely sure that our athletes are well prepared (for the Games) and that any political interference will not affect the results of our athletes. We are Russians, we are strong and we will overcome all the problems."
