Rio 2016: Australia refuse to move into Olympic Village

Tuesday, July 26 2016 by SNTV
  • The head of Australia's Olympic delegation told reporters in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday (24th July) that the 700-member team and staff would not move into their allocated rooms in the Athletes' Village for at least two days, because of ongoing electrical and plumbing problems.

Another day, and another problem for Rio's Olympic organisers.

Australia's Olympic squad have refused to move into the Olympic village due to serious safety concerns.

The head of Australia's Olympic delegation, Kitty Chiller, said on Sunday that there were serious electrical and plumbing problems in the village.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Kitty Chiller, Chef de Mission, Australian Olympic Committee:

"The decision we have taken is out of care for all our athletes. We have six coming in tomorrow and about 50 athletes coming in on Tuesday. In our mind, our building is not habitable and not conducive to the performance-focused environment that we are trying to create for our Australian team. We feel that our building was not safe because of the combination of plumbing and electrical issues. When we did our stress test yesterday afternoon, there were significant leakages from plumbing pipes and they were leaking in and around exposed wires and electrical components. Electricity and water is not a good combination."

With the games just 10 days away Rio officials are confident of a swift solution.
