Tuesday, July 26 2016 by SNTV
  • Rio de Janeiro's Mayor says that "he's almost putting a kangaroo jumping in front of the Australians so they can feel at home" at the opening of the Olympic Village this Sunday (July 24th) after complaints from the Australian Olympic Committee on the serious problems found on their apartments.

SOUNDBITE: (Portuguese) Eduardo Paes, Rio de Janeiro Mayor:

"This Olympic Village is incredible. And I will brag about it: It's more beautiful, it's better than the one in Sydney (2000 Olympics).Better than Sydney's (smiles). But we are here to welcome our visitors well. The adjustments that needs to be done, it will be done. If someone does not feel comfortable, it will have the most of the attention of the hosts here. All that we want is that everybody feels at home."

SOUNDBITE: (Portuguese) Carlos Nuzman, Rio 2016 Organising Committee Chairman:

"This is, perhaps, one of the best villages in the history of the Olympic Games. It is spectacular. Thirty one buildings, more than 3,500 apartments. It is natural that these adjustments, that I have said were needed before, are necessary to be done. And today is (July) the 24th. the opening ceremony will be on (August) the 5th. We have ten days."

SOUNDBITE: (Portuguese) Eduardo Paes, Rio de Janeiro Mayor:

"It's an operation of many people moving in at the same time. It's natural that you need to do one adjustment or another. But we will make the Australians feel at home here. I am almost putting a kangaroo here so they can jump in front of them."
