We learnt from Lord's- Cook

Tuesday, July 26 2016 by SNTV
  • Reaction from England captain Alastair Cook following England's 330-run victory in the second Test at Old Trafford in Manchester on Monday (25th July).

SOUNDBITE: (English) Alastair Cook, England captain:

(on the game and the improved England performance compared to the Lord's Test)

"No, 100 per cent, you know. I thought the way the guys showed a bit of character, from Lord's we came into this game under a bit of pressure and to play like that and get nearly 800 runs and nine, ten wickets we lost and to bowl them out for... 20 wickets, it's really good. The guys learnt a little bit from Lord's, we spoke about it and put it into action. Clearly, if someone gets 250 it does help, a really good performance and I was really pleased the way the guys bowled on a pretty decent wicket, a new ball wicket, a little bit with the new ball, but if you missed your lengths, you could get punished... but I thought it was a cracking Test match wicket."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Alastair Cook, England captain:

(on his surprise at the 'controversy' surrounding his decision not to enforce the follow-on on Sunday)

"I was a little bit surprised after I got home last night for the amount of controversy it seems to have caused. We bowled 60-odd overs, a couple of guys coming back from injury, you know, we thought we'd just pile on a few more runs, give the guys a bit of time off and then go hard again today. that's what I asked the lads and the lads did it well and... I think Trevor (England coach Trevor Bayliss) said a few people (in the media) had their tea times booked or something, so they might have... but of course, we could have forced the follow-on, but we end up doing a lot of overs, so in times gone past, people might have done it and have still won the game, but a bit of time off, come back, the bowlers run in hard and in one sense, with (Ben) Stokes going down today, we can still come hard with three seamers, so... I'm sorry if people would have done it a different way, but winning by... 350 runs is a good effort."
