Putin calls for new anti-doping body in Russia

Saturday, July 23 2016 by SNTV
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for a new anti-doping commission to be created to shape Russia's future strategy, as the country faces possible exclusion from the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

SOUNDBITE (Russian): Vladimir Putin, Russian President:

"The official position of the Russian government, President and all of us is that in sport there is not and cannot be a place for any doping. Sport must be clean, and an athlete's health must be properly protected.

SOUNDBITE (Russian): Vladimir Putin, Russian President:

"Such a commission should be headed by a person with an absolutely unimpeachable reputation. There is such a person in our country and he is Vitaly Georgievich Smirnov. He has been a member of the International Olympic Committee since 1971. I hope he will accept this offer as a person who devoted so many years to the Olympic movement and the development of sport in our country."
