President of Mexico hands Mexican flag to Olympic athletes

  • Taekwondo athlete Maria del Rosario Espinoza vowed that the Mexican Olympic team "will give our best effort to make Mexico proud" as the Mexico President Enrique Pena Nieto handed over the Mexican flag to athletes participating in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday (21st July).

    "Members of the delegation that will represent us in the Olympic and Paralympic Games of Rio 2016, I come, in the name of Mexico, to entrust to your patriotism this flag that symbolises its independence, its honour, its institutions and integrity. Do you pledge to respect and honour it with loyalty and determination?"

    "In putting it in your hands, the country trusts that as good and loyal Mexicans, you will know how to fulfill your pledge. Congratulations, may you have great success. Congratulations."

    "We are carriers of concrete values in which we don't accept the discrimination of creed, ideology or colours. Mexicans can be certain that all of us athletes that attend the Olympic Games will give our best effort to make Mexico proud."
