Friday, July 22 2016 by SNTV
  • Olympic rings made with recyclable material were unveiled on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday (21st July) on a day in which Brazil's Justice Ministry confirmed that police have arrested 10 people suspected of planning acts of terror during next month's Rio Olympics.

Brazil is about to host the greatest beach party on earth on Copacabana Beach. Taking a leaf out of the Sydney 2000 playbook, Rio 2016 Olympics organisers have constructed the beach volleyball stadium on the sands of Copacabana.

On Thursday The Olympic rings on Copacabana Beach are three metres tall and six metres wide (10 x 20 feet).

They were made with recycled plastic and designed by artist Elisa Brasil.

A few people protested against the corruption and the economic crisis in the city, demanding more is spent on hospitals, instead of the Olympic Games, which begin on 5th August.

One local, let his feelings be known about the city hosting the Games:

"The 'Carioca' (as people from Rio are called) do not want the Olympics, the 'Carioca' people want decent hospitals, decent education, decent security not just for the Olympics, because the 'Carioca' people are abandoned."

Earlier on Thursday, Brazil's minister for justice confirmed suspects attempting to collate with Islamic State were arrested in Rio:

"Today, we have finished our first operation, involving an alleged terrorist cell in Brazil, the first terrorist cell, 10 people (in that group) were arrested."

So while unwanted problems of doping issues, terror arrests and fears over Zika have dominated the news, the Rio de Janerio Olympics Games are now just over two weeks away.
